Results:

Cate Campbell has taken out the 100-metre freestyle by the smallest of margins over sister Bronte on night six of the Australian National Swimming Championships.

The sisters qualify for Rio, and build an impressive relay team after Emma McKeon and Brittany Elmslie finished in third and fourth place with only 1.2 seconds separating the top four.

Daniel Tranter took out the men’s 200 metre Individual Medley, but failed to make the ‘A’ qualifying time for Rio after Thomas Fisher-Harris decided to sit out the event.

That came after Mitch Larkin dominated the 200 metres backstroke, and Joshua Beaver managed to qualify for Rio, just scrapping under the qualifying time.

Taylor McKeown and Georgia Bohl qualified for the Olympics in the women’s 200-metre breaststroke, in opposite order to the 100 with McKeown coming in first.

Two events also carried non-Olympic status with Joshua Palmer taking out the men’s 50-metre breaststroke, and Holly Barratt taking out the women’s 50-metre butterfly.

Preview:

On the sixth evening at the Australian Swimming Championships, it is the women’s time to shine as they take to the pool for the 100-metre freestyle final. Can the Campbell sisters hold off the chasing pack? Find out as The Roar brings you live coverage from 9pm (AEST).

The night’s premier event, the women’s 100-metre freestyle looks as if it will be dominated by Cate and Bronte Campbell. They were incredibly strong last night in the semi-finals, with Cate defeating Bronte by about three-tenths of a second.

The fight for spots in the relay team will heat up as well, with Emma McKeon and Brittany Elmslie having the third and fourth fastest times coming into the finals. Both are very capable of challenging the Campbell sisters, but will have to pull out all the stops and race a perfect race.

It could all be decided at the start, though, with only 1.2 seconds splitting the top four last night.

There are two other finals that look like they will be competitive, with the women’s 200-metre breaststroke and men’s 200-metre individual medley. In the breaststroke Taylor McKeown is the favourite but only has the best qualifying time by 0.2 of a second to Georgia Bohl.

Coming back from an injury that caused her to miss races earlier this year, it will be interesting to see how her body has pulled up from last night, because if she isn’t at 100 per cent Bohl, along with Sally Hunter and defending champion Tessa Wallace will be ready to pounce.

The Men’s 200 IM saw Thomas Fraser-Holmes put in a huge performance last night to be the fastest qualifier by almost a second, but defending champion Daniel Tranter looked to be almost saving himself. If he puts in a swim that he is capable of, then it is race on there.

The one final that you could almost shut your eyes, block your eyes and guess the winner will be the 200-metre backstroke. Mitch Larkin smoked everyone in the semi-final last night and looked to take his foot off the gas at the end.

James Magnussen will also begin his shot at redemption in the 50-metres freestyle semi-finals, where he had the fastest time this morning in the heats.

Other semi-finals see the Women’s 200-metre backstroke and men’s 100-metre butterfly.

In multiclass events, both the men and women will contest the 200 IM final, while the 50 back final is on for women, and heats for men.

Prediction
Cate Campbell looked incredibly strong last night in the semi-final and as long as she didn’t completely burn out she should take the win again in the final.

In other finals action, watch out for Georgia Bohl in the women’s 200 breaststroke while Mitch Larkin should win by three seconds or more in the men’s 200 backstroke. The men’s 200 IM could be a very close one, but Thomas Fraser-Holmes, who is already under olympic qualifying time should get it done ahead of Daniel Tranter.
