Results:

Cameron McEvoy has completed an emphatic treble on Night 7 of the Australian National Swimming Championships, taking out the 50 metres Freestyle to go with his earlier 100 and 200-metre wins, becoming the first ever swimmer to do so.

McEvoy clocked a time of 21.44, with Matthew Abood in second, just four-hundredths of a second ahead of James Magnussen, who has been kept out of the Olympic team for individual events because of it.

RIO OLYMPICS EVENTS

Mitch Larkin meanwhile, did exactly the same thing in the 50 metres backstroke, capping off an awesome championships.

Emily Seebohm went down to Belinda Hocking in a hard-fought women’s 200-metre backstroke race, before David Morgan missed out on the Olympic qualifying time for the 100 butterfly by one-hundredth of a second.

As expected, Jessica Ashwood dominated the 800-metres freestyle with Georgia Bohl taking out the women’s 50 metre breaststroke.

In the semi-finals of the women’s 50 freestyle, the Campbell sisters dominated each race, with Cate breaking the Australian record after a scintillating performance.

Preview:

The sprinters return to the pool on Night 7 of the Australian National Swimming Championships, with James Magnussen and Cameron McEvoy to square off in the final of the 50 metres freestyle. Join The Roar for live coverage from 9pm (AEST).

As he was in the 100 freestyle a few nights ago, McEvoy is the fastest qualifier, and expected to book his spot for Rio.

Magnussen is still looking to bounce back after finishing fourth in the 100.

While they are the favourites, the likes of James Roberts, Will Stockwell and in particular Matthew Abood, who qualified for the event second, will challenge. Abood had a very strong swim in the semi-finals, and if he can replicate that could well be on his way to Rio.

While the men’s 50 freestyle is the headline event, the women take to the pool for their 50 freestyle semi-finals, and the 800 freestyle.

Jessica Ashwood is the favourite for the women’s 800, after setting an Australian record in her last meet, but the real battle looks to be for second place, and the other Olympic qualifying time.

The qualifying time is set at 8:26:96, meaning Kiah Melverton, Tasmin Cook and Leah Neale all needing to swim personal best times to break a very tight mark.

The women’s 50-metre freestyle semis should be once again controlled by the Campbell sisters, but the battle to qualify for the final will be tightly contested with less than a second splitting sixth through 20th in seeded times before the meet.

Emily Seebohm will return to the pool for the 200 metres backstroke final. She will be under intense pressure though from Belinda Hocking, who was only four-tenths of a second slower last night, along with Madison Wilson and 15-year-old Minna Atherton, who could be the good news story of the whole championships.

Atherton looked incredibly strong last night, and had control of the race for the first quarter. She was outside PB time, and so she may have some time left to drop this evening.

In other finals action, Grant Irvine should control the 100 metres butterfly, although Daniel Lester is in strong form, and Keiran Qaium came home at breakneck speed in the semi.

Prediction
McEvoy and Magnussen should qualify in the men’s 100, with the favourites having a strong night. Watch out for Minna Atherton in the women’s 200 backstroke, and Keiran Qaium in the men’s 100 butterfly.
