Celebrate with victory, not defeat

Forget Leicester's title defence, they're scrambling just to stay up. (Pioeb / Wikimedia Commons)

Like football purists everywhere I am enamoured with the Leicester City fairytale.

Their rise from prime relegation candidates to the unlikeliest of Premier League champions is as remarkable as it is inspiring.

The likes of Wes Morgan and Kasper Schmeichel in particular have spent their careers trying to prove themselves worthy of a role at a Premier League club – yet here they are, poised to join the most elite club of all – that of champions.

I dearly want the fantastic Foxes to complete the fairytale and win the title, just not tonight.

Full disclosure, I am a Tottenham Hotspur fan.

My dad became a fan in the 80s when Spurs boasted the likes of Ossie Ardiles, Paul Gascoigne and Gary Linekar (a Leicester legend also) and I followed in his footsteps from a young age.

Success has been in short supply in my lifetime and I can honestly say the current Spurs side is the best I have seen.

However, this is not the reason I want Spurs to defeat vanquished title holders Chelsea and delay Leicester’s moment of glory.

The reality is, Leicester will win the title – they would have to lose their two remaining games, having lost just three all season, while Spurs won theirs.

The end to my beloved club’s dream of winning the title this season is inevitable.

It is because I am a hopeless romantic that I hope Leicester win the title another day – Saturday, to be precise.

Sport is about moments – split seconds of hope, wonder and success.

The heartbeat of silence between the ball hitting the back of the net and the roar of the crowd.

I find it hard to believe anyone following this remarkable story would want to miss the opportunity of seeing the final scenes play out in front of them.

Should Tottenham falter at Stamford Bridge, we will not see the unbridled joy of Leicester players, coaching staff and fans in that precious moment.

Yes, there will be confetti, champagne, hugs and probably tears when the final whistle blows on their final two games and they are presented with the trophy they have so desperately fought for, but will the occasion not be even slightly dulled if it is immediately preceded by a dead rubber?

What about those final minutes – seconds, even – as the clock winds down and players and fans alike yearn for that final, decisive chance or the piercing sound that signals the realisation of a once unimaginable, impossible dream – a feeling they can share together.

I’m a fan who has never seen his team win a league title – this season is the closest Spurs have come in my lifetime and may be the closest they ever get – and it’s these moments I envy of Leicester fans more than any other.

Do you want that decisive moment of triumph to be of another team losing or of yours winning?

Or drawing? Doing whatever it took to achieve the desired result in front of your very eyes?

I hope the Leicester faithful get the opportunity to ride that rollercoaster of raw emotion when the Foxes play Everton at the King Power Stadium on Stadium, knowing only win will secure them the ultimate prize.

So join me in a chorus of ‘Come on you Spurs!’ tonight, not to deny Leicester City Football Club and its fans their crowning moment, but to give them the perfect one. The one such an extraordinary tale deserves.
