Somehow the unveiling of a new Wallabies jersey has become an annual event – as if seeing our national side wearing a slightly different predominantly gold fabric covering their torso is worthy of more than passing mention.

The sad thing is, it tends to fulfil that mandate, with people every year frothing at the mouth as they scream “it’s too yellow, it should be gold!”, or “where’s the collar? Rugby jerseys should have collars!”

Well the ARU have today unveiled their latest iteration of the Wallabies jersey with partner ASICS… And it’s pretty much the same one they wore at the World Cup.

(Cue the same anger or elation people felt last year.)

The media release trumpeting the new release was at least good enough to acknowledge this fact, although rather than simply saying “yeah, it’s basically the same”, they made a point of highlighting the new shirt’s “new neckline with white piping to emulate the much loved traditional white collar of past jerseys, and silicon gripper pads on the front to enhance players’ grip”.

Traditionalists rejoice! It’s got a bit of white material that sorta-kinda looks like a collar!

Wait, didn’t the World Cup jersey have that too?

Look closely, and you’ll see last year’s jersey had the same ‘grip’ pads as well.

The Wallabies 2015 jersey – hey look, they got the same male model for this one too.

So, really, the only difference is that rather than having a green patch with gold Southern cross stars on the shoulder, 2016’s jersey is uniformly gold with green Southern Cross stars. And maybe it is less ‘yellow’ and more ‘gold’.

Well, that’s worth forking out $179.99.

Speaking about the ‘new’ design, Israel Folau said, “I love the new jersey. It fits well, the material feels great and I’m impressed with the new cut. The colours and style are also a throwback to jerseys from the past… I think everyone is going to love it.”

“Everyone is going to love it”? Israel, this isn’t your first jersey launch, you should know better than that by now.
