The Parramatta Eels shouldn’t be allowed to win this year’s competition. The reason is simple, you should not be allowed win a premiership in the season in which you were caught cheating.

It simply shouldn’t be an option.

Parramatta should not be rewarded for being caught out in March and April. If they were caught out in May and June, and got their points deducted from them then, then they couldn’t win the competition.

A premiership should not be won on ‘when’ you were cheating, it should be won and lost on ‘if’ you were cheating.

Lets have a look at if another club gets caught for cheating, for example, in June. This club are running second on 24 points and looking to be in a great position. Lets say they are $450,000 over the cap, which is less than Parramatta but still significantly over.

The NRL, by being consistent takes all their points off them, accrued by means of cheating. By this stage Parra have won eight straight and are heading for a finals birth. So the second team caught cheating, although not as much over the cap as the Eels, but caught later in the season, have been punished worse than Parramatta.

Unfair? You better believe it.

If the NRL want Parramatta to play for points, then they can do so, but without the chance of playing finals football.

Todd Greenberg has said that when Melbourne didn’t play for points in 2010 it was ‘soul destroying’. This is far from fact.

Sure it felt flat watching them. But the players showed it was a great platform to show their character, as individuals and as a team. There can be little doubt that the character showed during their 2010 season contributed to a premiership just two years later. Melbourne displayed great qualities as a club and team when they could have thrown in the white towel.

Parramatta should not be allowed to win a premiership in a year they were caught cheating. The NRL have got this one wrong.
