Six-time surfing world champion Stephanie Gilmore has become one of the lucky few surfers in the world to ride the man-made barrels of Kelly Slater’s new wave machine.

The 28-year-old Aussie travelled to California for the ride, and the trip was certainly worth it, with Gilmore cruising her way to one of the longest tube rides recorded in the facilities short lifetime.

Following the epic ride, Gilmore was clearly in awe of what the device was able to produce.

“I was in the barrel then I thought I should try and come out and try do a turn,” Gilmore said.

“Then I thought, ‘Are you kidding me, who wants to get out of this barrel’?”

The wave machine has been widely touted as an incredible piece of engineering, however, some traditionalists have raised concerns about the impact a ‘perfect’ wave could have on the art of surfing and ‘reading’ a wave.
