Browne stripped of WBA heavyweight title

Australian boxer Lucas Browne is considering his legal options after the WBA stripped him of their regular heavyweight world boxing title and suspended him for six months.

The move comes after the B sample of a doping test taken following his fight against Ruslan Chagaev also tested positive for banned substance clenbuterol.

Browne became Australia’s first heavyweight world champion in March when he climbed off the canvas to stop Chagaev in Grozny, Chechnya.

“I’m leaving everything to my lawyer Leon Margules,” Browne tweeted in reaction to Friday’s news.

Avid social network user Browne also posted a pointed slogan on his Instagram account.

“I am terribly sorry if you don’t like my harsh honesty, but to be honest, I don’t like your sugar-coated bull…., either,” Browne posted on Instagram.

Browne has always insisted he didn’t take any illegal substance in the lead up to the fight.

However, clenbuterol turned up in Browne’s A urine sample in a post-fight test conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).

The WBA, who named Browne their Fighter of the Month following his spectacular victory, took no immediate action against him following that test.

Once the B sample corroborated the earlier one, the WBA championships committee stripped Browne and suspended him.

“When that six-month period is over, Browne’s status will be reconsidered, depending on whether or not he intends to return to the ring,” the WBA said on their website.

The WBA also said there was no way to determine whether Browne’s assertion that the drug had been consumed in something he ate was true or not.

“But the WBA has stated repeatedly that the boxer and his team are responsible for what enters his system, whether it’s by eating, drinking, or other means,” the WBA said.
