West Coast exploded out of the gate with a 57 point quarter and just never slowed down, winning every quarter of the game to blitz the lead over 100 right at the end.
REPORT: EAGLES SMASH SAINTS IN RECORD WIN
Josh Kennedy sunk five goals in the opening term but interestingly didn’t get another one for the rest of the game while Mark LeCras flew with six of his own in a stellar performance by the 29-year old.
What’s as impressive as the Eagles 132 points on the board, is the fact they held the Saints to just 29, in a superb defensive effort that just didn’t give St Kilda a look in.
Final score
West Coast Eagles 20.12.132
St Kilda Saints 3.11.29
St Kilda Saints will make the long trip west to tackle the 7th-placed West Coast Eagles at Subiaco Oval this afternoon. Catch all the live highlights and action on The Roar from 4:40pm (AEST).
The Eagles have made a bit of a bunny out of the Saints in recent times, winning their last six games against them, with their last four victories coming at an average winning margin of 52 points.
St Kilda are coming into this one off a strong game at home, pushing the undefeated North Melbourne side right to the limit, conceding a late goal that cost them the game in a very tight affair, proving they have the chops to hang with the top sides.
Like the Saints, West Coast couldn’t take the points last week, recording a loss of their own against the Cats by 44 in what was a fairly disappointing showing for Adam Simpson’s men.
The Eagles have shown good fight in the pack this year, sitting atop the competition for contested marks with an average of 13.6 per game, no doubt impacted by star key forward Josh J Kennedy who sits in third in the league for marks this year.
Team News
The main talking point for the week has been the omission of Swans premiership player turned West Coast convert Lewis Jetta from Simpson’s squad. Sam Butler has been called in to take Jetta’s place in the side. For the Saints, Sam Fisher has been rested after some light training sessions during the week, complaining of general soreness.
Darren Michington is the other victim, being dropped in favour of Jack Sinclair who has overcome a calf injury that saw him miss last week. Dylan Roberton will come back into the side as a direct swap for the aforementioned Sam Fisher absence, Roberton returning from an injury (knee) of his own.
Prediction
The Saints have struggled with inconsistency in the opening rounds this year, and a long trip to the West Coast certainly won’t do them any favours. The Eagles should get the job done relatively comfortably in front of the home crowd.
