AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli have made history in the Indian Premier League, combining for the highest partnership in Twenty20 history.
De Villiers joined Kohli in the middle after Chris Gayle was dismissed for six to have Royal Challengers Bangalore 1 for 19 after four overs.
From that meagre platform, de Villiers and Kohli put on a phenomenal display of short-form batting. They took the score to 76 after 10 overs, before exploding to decimate the Gujarat Lions bowling attack and reach 248 at the end of the innings.
De Villiers was the early aggressor, reaching his hundred in the 16th over from 43 balls, while Kohli waited until the closing overs to fully unleash. The Indian superstar hit 57 runs from his final 14 balls before falling for 109 off 55. De Villiers finished not out on 129 from 52 deliveries.
The 229-run partnership was the highest ever in the game’s shortest format, and it was just the second time in 5,703 T20 matches where two players both scored centuries in the same innings.
Unsurprisingly the partnership was more than enough to guarantee victory for the Royal Challengers, who crushed the Lions by an IPL-record 144 runs.
