Liverpool head in as the favourites but not by any significant margin when they face Sevilla in the Europa League final. Join The Roar for a live blog of the match, starting from 4:45am AEST.

Sevilla come into this match with some significant history on their side. They’ve won the tournament four times, more than any other club, including the last two on the trot in 2014 and 2015. They’ve never lost once they’ve made it to the final.

No side has ever won the competition three years in a row, so Sevilla have the chance to claim a unique piece of history and also move well ahead of any other club in the total titles race.

That said, Liverpool have an impressive history in this competition too with three wins, though they date a bit further back, coming in 1973, 1976 and most recently in 2001. They too have never lost once through to the final, so that streak will break for one of these teams tonight.

Sevilla can consider themselves somewhat lucky however to have this chance to defend their two consecutive titles after they were nearly knocked out during the quarter finals by Athletic Bilbao. Nothing separated the two teams until a penalty shootout saw Sevilla move ahead 5-4. Semi-finals victory over Shakhtar Donetsk then saw the move into the final.

Liverpool on the other hand have made their path to the final by knocking out Augsburg, Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and Villarreal.

Unlike the matches in the knockout stage the final will be played in a single leg – as it has been since 1998 – in neutral territory, the city of Basel in Switzerland.

Prediction
Sevilla will head into the match with their confidence high, and the fervent desire to make history. They’ll make it tough, but Liverpool will get over the line.
