Newcastle and the NRL have concluded an investigation into alleged racial abuse at Hunter Stadium without identifying a perpetrator.

Claims surfaced that Knights fullback Dane Gagai was allegedly racially abused at the end of the club’s round 10 fixture, won by Cronulla 62-0 at Hunter Stadium last Sunday.

Gagai had been in tears after the performance but it was thought to do with the death of his grandmother rather than a racial slur.

Former NRL player Joe Williams made the claims of racial abuse on Twitter after the match.

“The grubs yelling racial abuse at Dane Gagai in @NRLKnights @NRL game today – calling him sooky BLACK C##T should be banned 4 LIFE” Williams wrote.

However the alleged culprit could not be found.

Newcastle released a statement on Sunday saying that the matter had been concluded.

“The Newcastle Knights, along with the NRL Integrity Unit, this week investigated alleged racist behaviour at the Knights’ round 10 match,” the statement read.

“The alleged racist behaviour is very disappointing however the investigation was unable to identify an individual.

“The club takes this opportunity to reinforce it has zero tolerance for any anti-social behaviour, and this type of behaviour is not acceptable at our games. “
