Scotland had never been in a Sevens final, and they celebrated by scoring two tries in the last minute to down South Africa 27-26 in an extraordinary decider.

The Scots led 10-7 at the break, thanks ta very rare pushover maul for their second try,

In the second session, South Africa, as expected, exploded with their speedsters Seabelo Sanatla, Rosko Specman, and Cecil Afrika crossing for tries and to all there at Twickenham and watching world wide on television, it was game. set,and match.

But Scotland skipper Owen Wight, man of the final, had other ideas, and somehow he lifted his troops to the stunning victory.

With the Scots ectastic over their first final, the likes of Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia have work to do before Rio and the Olympic Games.

Jarryd Hayne, the most talked about newcomer to Sevens, now has seven weeks to convince Fiji coach Ben Ryan he will be on the plane to Rio.

Hayne’s diving ankle tap saved Fiji being beaten by France in the quarters, and he wasn’t on the field long enough to stop South Africa winning the semi.

But Fiji retained the world champion crown by reaching the quarters, so all wasn’t lost.

New Zealand were the real losers, thumped by the USA 42-14, with American flyer Peter Baker crossing for four tries.

Expect the men in black to again be a force in Rio.

But don’t expect too much of Australia unless they stop being negative and start moving forward in attack, and especially defence, with the exceptions of 19-year-old Henry Hutchison, and the far more experienced Tom Kingston – the only really positive Australians.

This series has been ground-breaking as worldwide interest in the Sevens has risen to new heights,

The record-breaking series stats:
Tries scored – 2622
Conversions – 1699
Penalties – 7
Total points scored – 16468.

Most points – Madison Hughes (USA) – 331.

Mots tries – Seabelo Sanatla (South Africa) – 66.
