Australian rugby have announced the dates for the 2017 Sydney Rugby Sevens leg. The tournament, which was a smash hit in 2016, will be held on Saturday February 4 and Sunday February 5, once again to be played at Allianz Stadium.

The 2016 tournament was the first time the Australian Sevens tournament had been moved away from the Gold Coast since 2012 and proved a huge success, with 73,000 fans filling out the Moore Park venue over the two days of competition.

New Zealand were victorious in the final, defeating Australia 27 points to 24 in a thrilling finish to the tournament. Fiji would win the battle for third place against South Africa 26-12.

Sydney will once again join a list of iconic cities around the world to host a leg of the World Rugby Sevens, with Dubai, Cape Town, Wellington, Hong Kong, London, Los Vegas, Vancouver, Singapore and Paris all scheduled to host in 2017.

NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres said the 2017 event will build on the incredible success of this year’s tournament.

‘The inaugural Sydney 7s was a huge success, attracting sports fans from around the world to the Harbour City for a festival of fast, running rugby.

This year’s event provided a huge boost to the local visitor economy, attracting more than 17,000 domestic and international overnight visitors to NSW, with a total visitor spend of over $10 million.’

Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver said: ‘The 2016 HSBC Sydney 7s showcased everything that is great about the game. Not only did we see some stunning rugby, but we also saw fans from different cultures having a weekend to remember. There was plenty of entertainment for the adults and a great family vibe to the event as well.’

“It highlighted that the game has never been in a healthier shape globally. By the time February rolls around, fans will be watching current Olympians take to the field, elite athletes at the peak of their powers.’

Tickets for the 2017 edition are set to go on sale in October.

After tickets sold out nine days before the tournament in 2016, Bill Pulver is urging fans to get in early or risk missing out.

‘We’d strongly encourage fans wishing to get to the event next February to snap up tickets as early as possible to avoid disappointment.’

Australian Rugby Union has also confirmed they have submitted a tender with the New South Wales Government to host a leg of the women’s Rugby Sevens tournament in Sydney for three years, commencing from 2016-17.
