The chances of Tim Cahill playing in the A-League appear all but over with the Socceroos’ star in discussions to remain in China as three clubs pursue his signature, it’s been reported.

Australia’s all-time leading goal scorer was earmarked by A-League clubs and Football Federation Australia as a potential marquee for next season as he will be available as a free agent in July, Fairfax Media reports.

That’s at the expiration of his existing deal with Huangzhou Greentown.

But Cahill’s management has ruled out a move to Australia as the 36-year-old striker will likely remain in China until 2017 with some big clubs set to submit offers.

Fairfax says it understands Huangzhou are eager to keep Cahill and another option is a potential return to Shanghai.

Cahill’s agent Ante Alilovic said he was “very confident Cahill will be staying in China next season” and there were three clubs interested in him.

A minor hamstring injury means Cahill is in doubt to play for the Socceroos in the two-game friendly series against Greece in June in Sydney and Melbourne.
