Wrecking-ball centre Konrad Hurrell is closing in on a move to Gold Coast after parting with the Warriors.
The blockbusting but inconsistent centre was released on Wednesday by the NRL club after months of uncertainty over his future, despite being under contract until the end of 2018.
While he’d been linked with several English Super League clubs, it’s believed the Titans are the frontrunners to snare the Tongan international.
Late on Wednesday, the club confirmed it was in discussions with Hurrell’s management.
“We are also aware there has been other interest in the 24-year-old centre,” a statement from the club read.
Hurrell was a fan favourite at the Warriors but played just three matches for the Auckland-based club this season and was one of six players stood down from first grade after a late night out four weeks ago.
Titans’ coach Neil Henry has made it no secret the club is on the hunt for an outside back.
Hurrell’s manager Richard White refused to disclose which candidate was the favourite for his client’s services.
“We’ve had various conversations in the last little while,” he said.
“We’re pretty close on a couple, but I just can’t confirm that at the moment. We will know a bit more tomorrow.”
White said Hurrell was overwhelmed by the interest in him.
“He’s humbled by the support he has had since the news broke today,” he said.
Hurrell scored 41 tries in 71 NRL appearances for the Warriors.
He said he had mixed emotions at first about leaving the Warriors but was now excited as he looked forward to the rest of his career.
In a Facebook post, Hurrell said he was sad to leave the Warriors but was looking forward to the future, and he thanked the club for everything they had done for him.
“Going to miss the brothers that I go to war with every week,” he said.
He also alluded to the off-field indiscretions.
“Just want to apologise both to the club and to my brothers on some unprofessional behaviour that I’ve let everyone down and that I am not proud of but learnt lesson from it.”
