It was all too easy for England in the first Test and Sri Lanka need to hit back in a big way if they want to keep this series alive. Join The Roar for live scores of Day 1 from 8pm (AEST).

After being troubled by the Sri Lankan bowling attack on Day 1 of the first Test, with a pitch offering plenty of assistance, England fought back strongly and the match was over inside three days.

Despite having only 53 overs on the first day’s play, England were 5-153 at the end of play. Turns out they could have declared their innings there, with Sri Lanka’s fragile batting collapsing twice.

England ended up on 298 thanks to a brilliant 140 from Jonny Bairtow, backed up by Alex Hales scoring 86. All of Sri Lanka’s bowlers chipped in with either wickets or pressure, but they should have restricted England to a lot less given the conditions of the pitch.

The Sri Lankans then collapsed to be all out for 91, with Angelo Matthews scoring 34. They were asked to follow on and knocked over for just 119, with Kusal Mendis top scoring with 53. It was all over for the Sri Lankan batsmen in a combined total of 72.1 overs, as James Anderson ran riot, ending up with combined figures of 10-39 from 25.1 overs on a pitch that he might as well have designed and curated for his bowling style.

The pitch served up for the second Test will be once again green, and it is going to be down to Sri Lanka’s bowlers to improve. They underperformed given it is a strength of theirs and should have England cleaned up for well under 200.

England though will be a little concerned by their batting performance on the strip. Aside from Hales and Bairstow, there were only 57 runs scored between the other nine batsmen, including three ducks.
