Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will have a battle on his hands we he faces off against Ernests Gulbis as the pair aim to progress to the fourth round. Join The Roar for live scores from around 10pm (AEST).

Latvian Ernests Gulbis may not have had the best lead-up to the French Open but he has certainly started the second grand slam of the year in style.

The world No.80 experienced first round exits at Barcelona and Munich and failed to get out of the qualifying stage at Madrid.

He then went on to reach the second round at Rome and Geneva and is yet to drop a set at the French Open.

The 2014 French Open semi-finalist has knocked out Andreas Seppi 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 and 26th seed Joao Sousa 6-2, 7-5, 6-3, and he will be keen to possibly sending Jo-Wilfried Tsonga packing.

Tsonga won’t go away easily with a brilliant lead-up to the French Open including a semi-final finish at Monte Carlo where he defeated Roger Federer in the quarters and a third round exit in Madrid at the hands of Milos Raonic.

The seventh seed has now won seven of his last ten matches however, his biggest weakness against Gulbis will be his fitness after the Frenchman endured a five set showdown with Marcos Baghdatis in the second round on the back of a straight sets blow out of qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff.

The pair have been involved in five previous encounters with Tsonga winning the first three while Gulbis has come out on top on their last two meetings.

Last time they clashed came in the final at Marseille in early 2014 with Gulbis defeating Tsonga in straight sets 7-6, 6-4.

They have never met on clay.

The winner will take on either 12th seed David Goffin or Spaniard Nicolas Almagro in the fourth round.

Prediction

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be pushed to four sets and go further into the tournament as he aims to win in front of his home crowd.

Tsonga in four sets.
