In the last two weeks, Newcastle Knights have played very well in their losses. In Monday night’s match against Parramatta, they may have fallen short – but they never gave up.

Parramatta were the first on the board with a converted try from former Knight Beau Scott, going up 6-0. The Eels went on to score again through Semi Radradra, who scored his ninth try of the season – but the kick was missed by Michael Gordon, 10-0

Newcastle started a strong fightback with Sione Mata’utia scoring his first try of the season. They went back to back after former Eel Pauli Pauli scored against his old club, but both kicks were missed by sharpshooter Trent Hodkinson, making the score 10-8.

In the dying minutes of the first half, Nathan Ross had scored a 90-metre try off a scrum on Newcastle’s ten metre line and Trent Hodkinson converted this one to make it 14-10, which was the halftime score. Keiran Foran left the field with a shoulder complaint and didn’t return.

In the second half, Parramatta showed excellent defence on the Knights tryline. Newcastle got penalties within penalty goal range and kicked two to go out to an eight-point lead.

The Eels fought back and debutant Bevan French scored a try on debut but Michael Gordon missed the kick, 18-14. Gordon himself scored a try straight afterwards and converted it to give Parramatta a 20-18 lead.

In the dying stages of the match, after errors both ways, Newcastle tried to take the lead but were unable to do so. With only moments on the clock, Nathan Ross went over the line and appeared to have scores a double but Fenech’s foot knocked the ball out of his hands. This proved to be the difference as Parramatta held on to the 20-18 lead to defeat Newcastle.

Newcastle Knights have been showing better improvement in the last two weeks and if they play the way they did against Parramatta, they can give the Cowboys an absolute run for their money.
