Out of all the weeks to play the Brisbane Broncos, those either leading into or following State of Origin games are the ones you would pick. They are one of the teams that suffers from the Origin arena big time and it was no different this time around with six representatives.
Of course, the Broncos played leading into the Origin game as well, going down in a hard fought game by a point to the Wests Tigers.
There is no way you rely on that as your form guide for the third placed team though, considering their level of play this year. A loss against the North Queensland Cowboys means they have lost their last two on the trot though so they will be more than a little keen to get back in the winners circle.
Their form before that though was ridiculously good, having won eight of their first ten to start the season.
All of Darius Boyd, Corey Parker, Josh McGuire and Sam Thaiday have been named to back up from Origin, with Greg Eden and Jayden Su’a out. Andrew McCullogh is also out with injury, meaning Travis Waddell will start at hooker. The other thing to note is the resting of Corey Oates and Matt Gillett.
The Warriors haven’t been in the same boat so far this year, sitting way down in 14th place and showing about next to no consistency and the resolve in defence of an under 20s team.
They come into this match off what can only be described as a pathetic loss to the Canberra Raiders – beaten by 26 points and not even looking remotely in the contest. For a team with so much talent, questions have to be asked of the organisation and how it is all being run.
There are plenty of changes for the Auckland based club this week with Solomone Kata and Manu Vatuvei returning in place of Matthew Allwood and Jonothan Wright. Furthermore they have also made a trio of changes to the bench with Albert Vete, Nathaniel Roache and Charlie Gubb replacing youngsters James Gavet, Jazz Tevaga and John Palavi.
Last time these teams met was back in Round 2, with the Broncos being not quite at their best yet finding a way to win the match 25-10.
Prediction
Despite the players backing up from Origin for Brisbane and playing away from home, the Warriors are a rabble. Broncos to get the win fairly easily.
Broncos by 20.
