The people have spoken and Optus appear to have listened, today announcing that they will be offering the upcoming English Premier League season to existing and new customers for free – well, free with certain strings attached.

The minimum spend to get access to the Premier League is a $30 per month post-paid plan, and you need to sign up by July 31 – which, to be fair, is a matter of days before the new season kicks off.

Optus had previously announced customers would have to pay $15 per month for access to matches, unless you were paying at least $85 per month for your mobile or broadband.

This pricepoint will still take effect for customers who sign up after August 1.

“Today, we’re shaking up the market even more by offering our customers more of the content they love. From data free prepaid music streaming, to the Premier League, Optus is changing people’s expectations of their telco provider,” said Ben White, Managing Director of Marketing and Product at Optus.

“To celebrate our first Premier League season, we’re making it more affordable than ever by giving customers their first season for free on a range of plans from as little as $30 a month.”

Interesting that White said “first season for free”, leaving the door open for a return to the extra charge for access in coming seasons.

This morning’s announcement comes as EPL subscriptions go on sale “on a range of postpaid, SIM-only, mobile broadband, and home broadband plans” (click here for more info from Optus).

As for people who are with a different internet provider, you can still get access to the Premier League via a Yes TV by Fetch Mini device, at a cost of $5 per month.

“We understand that some customers either can’t or don’t want to change their broadband providers, but still want the Premier League. The mini device is a great alternative because it works on any fixed internet service in Australia and gives fans access to the Premier League live and on demand via the big screen,” Mr White said.

According to Optus “More details will be made available on our website in July”.
