Australian cycling star Cameron Meyer has resigned from his professional team, citing unspecified personal reasons.
Dimension Data announced on Wednesday that the 28-year-old West Australian had asked for an immediate release from his contract.
“Unfortunately I have made the tough decision to leave Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, due to ongoing personal issues I have had (recently),” Meyer said in a team statement.
“I have been unable to train or race at the required level that is needed for the World Tour.”
It was unclear on Wednesday afternoon whether Meyer had quit the sport.
His last road race was the Tour of Romandie, which ended on May 1.
He made a strong start to this year, finishing runner-up behind Jack Bobridge at the Australian championships road race and then 12th overall at Adelaide’s Tour Down Under.
Meyer also made a return to the track for the March world championships, where he and Miles Scotson finished fifth in the madison.
Meyer made his name as a multiple track world champion, specialising in the points and madison races, before switching fulltime to the road.
He also rode on the track at the 2008 Olympics.
Meyer won the 2011 Tour Down Under and the following year was a foundation member of the Orica-GreenEDGE, Australia’s first top-level professional road team.
He was a member of the GreenEDGE squads that won the team time trial stages at the 2013 Tour de France and 2014 Giro d’Italia.
