At the age of 72, most people running normal day-to-day jobs are thinking about, or have already retired. But not Swedish shooter Oscar Swahn, who in 1920 became the oldest athlete to ever compete at the Olympic Games.
The incredible feat is still a record that still stands today.

Swahn didn’t begin his Olympic Games career until 1908 in London, at which time he was already a 60-year old.
He started things off on a positive note with a pair of gold medals in both the individual and team single shot events, while he also had a bronze medal in the ‘running deer double shot’.
In 1912, the Olympics would be hosted in Swahn’s backyard – Stockholm, Sweden as he broke the record of Joshua Millner to become the oldest athlete to ever win a medal at the games aged 64. He would help Sweden to gold in the single shot event while claiming bronze in the double shot once again.
After the war in 1916, he returned to the Games in 1920 at Antwerp.
At age 72, he became the oldest ever participant in the Olympic Games, helping Sweden to a silver medal in the team double shot. Even in what was to be his last Olympics, he still had a busy program, participating in all the events he possibly could.
Swahn was scheduled to compete again in 1924 when he would have been an incredible 76, but had to withdraw his spot in the Swedish team due to illness.
It is doubtful a record such as this one will ever be broken again, so one would expect Swahn to have his name in the record books for the forseeable future as the oldest ever olympian and medal winner.
