It was a gilt-edged start to the game from both sides. A horrible mix up at the back for Switzerland in the opening minute handed Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik the ball at the top of the box with the goalkeeper off his line. But with goal gaping, the young striker fluffed his lines shooting high and wide.

Poland though remained on the front foot in the opening ten minutes with the Swiss slow to find their feet.

Switzerland eventually worked their way into the game and attacking with real menace throughout the first 45 minutes.

But they were shaky at the back and would be made to pay before the break. Poland countered quickly through Kamil Grosicki who was able to find Jacub Blaszczykowski unmarked at the far post who swept it under the legs of Yann Sommer and into the goal.

Poland opened the scoring on 39 minutes and taking a deserved lead into the break.

The Swiss emerged from the break with plenty of intensity but struggled to carve out any clear cut chances as Xherdan Shaqiri did his best to spark his team to life.

Poland were content to play on the counter as they did their best to suppress the Switzerland attack.
Lukas Fabianksi kept Poland ahead on 73 minutes as he saved a free-kick from Ricardo Rodriguez that was heading towards the top right corner of goal.

With 78 minutes played it was the crossbar that then kept Poland ahead as Haris Seferovic struck the it with a thunderous shot from inside the box.

Switzerland were going to need something special to find the back of the Poland net and it was Shaqiri who delivered in the 82nd minute. The midfielder acrobatically volleyed from the top of the box into the bottom right of goal to level the scores.

In a tense final few minutes of regulation time, neither side could find the back of the net again as extra time was called upon to try and separate these two sides.

Still riding the moment of their late equaliser, it was Switzerland looking the more dangerous in the first half of extra time though it was Poland with the majority of the ball. No real chances of note though as both sides started to tire.

The second half of extra time remained one dominated by Switzerland with Fabianski the only reason the Swiss were unable to find a winner and penalties called upon.

After 120 minutes of football, the game was ultimately decided by a wayward Granit Xhaka penalty as Poland converted all five of theirs to book their spot in the quarter-finals.
