With 40 days until the opening ceremony in Rio, it’s time to get this infamous moment out of the way nice and early. After all, this one still hurts sixteen years after it happened.
Jane Saville, a reigning Commonwealth champion and hometown hero, was leading the women’s 20km walk with the finish line in sight at the Sydney Olympics. A gold medal was just a couple of hundred metres away, but standing in the way was judge Lamberto Vacchi.

Saville had already been warned twice for lifting, but that didn’t make the red card brandished by Vacchi any less cruel.
All the attention remained fixed on Saville after she was disqualified – no-one seemed to care too much that China’s Lipang Wang was on her way to a gold medal.
When asked by a reporter if there was anything she wanted, a clearly distraught Saville replied, “A gun to shoot myself.”
But, despite being devastated at the judges’ heavy-handed use of their cards – five walkers were disqualified over the course of the race – Saville didn’t criticise the decision or lash out at the officials.
She instead kept at the sport, won two more Commonwealth golds and, at Athens 2004, became Australia’s first ever female medallist in walking by taking bronze in the 20km event.
“Nothing will make up for a gold medal in your home town, but you know this is where the Olympics began and any medal here, you know, I’m absolutely ecstatic with it.” Quite rightly so, too.
