39 days to Rio: The Aussie who dominated the track

Yesterday, we recalled one of the most heartbreaking moments in Australian Olympic history. In the interests of balance, we’ll now cast our minds back to an Aussie who was so good, his winning time was better than the gold medal winner’s more than 30 years later.

Herb Elliot’s dominance over the 1500 metres and one-mile races was absolute. Going into the 1500m final at Rome 1960, he was the world record holder and unbackable favourite.

He didn’t disappoint.

Elliot started the race by hanging back in the middle of the pack, content to allow Frenchman Michel Bernard to lead them around the track. He gradually made his way to the front, before producing a barnstorming finish to cross the line a record 20 metres ahead of his nearest rival.

Elliot’s time of 3:35.6 set a new world record, and would prove to be streets ahead of his era – it was quicker than the winning times set in Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996.

The Aussie retired a year after his Olympic triumph aged just 22, but his lasting impact on athletics is nothing short of memorable. He ran 42 races over the 1500m and one-mile distances between 1957 and 1961 and was never beaten. Ever.

Not bad for a bloke who was evicted during his first visit to an Olympic village. But then again, that did happen after Elliot had snuck through a back fence in Melbourne in 1956. It’s just amazing a security guard was able to catch him in the first place.
