Match result:

England have suffered a shock 2-1 loss to tournament minnows Iceland to be knocked out of Euro 2016.

Things started well for the English, earning a penalty in the fourth minute, which was ably converted by Wayne Rooney.

Their lead would last just two minutes, though, as Ragnar Sigurdsson sent home a brilliant header.

Only 12 minutes later, Iceland would take the lead after Kolbeinn Sigþórsson slipped one past the fingertips of Joe Hart.

Iceland will go on to face tournament hosts France.

Despite not losing a game to date, England’s form at the Euro 2016 competition has been inconsistent.

England’s only win of the group stage was a last-minute, 2-1 win over Wales.

With the likes of Jamie Vardy, Raheem Sterling and Wayne Rooney up front, England were expected to produce goals. However, after being held nil-all in their last fixture against Slovakia, despite dominating possession, England know which aspect of their game that they need to improve.

After holding both Portugal and Hungary to 1-all draws in their first two group games, Iceland stunned Austria 2-1, much to the delight of their fans.

Perhaps the biggest underdogs of the entire competition, with a population of just over 300,000, eight percent of Iceland turned out watch their side play Austria. Their ability to absorb pressure and turn defence into attack may pay dividends against an aggressive English side.

England have a big opportunity to progress to the next stage of the completion against a much weaker side, however Iceland have been on fire as of late, and if the English get sloppy, they may pay for it.

Prediction
England 2-0 Iceland
