The Wimbledon draw has opened up well for Roger Federer as he looks to continue his push for an 18th grand slam in the fourth round against the in-form Steve Johnson. Join The Roar for live scores from 10pm (AEST).

With the elemination of Novak Djokovic, it means Federer now won’t have to play anyone in the top four seeds before the final, and even then only if Andy Murray was to make it through.

All things considered, this could be the best chance for Federer to add to his 17 grand slam titles in a long while.

That chance only continues to realistically grow when you consider how strong he has looked during the first three rounds, after a bit of a sloppy build up to the tournament.

After missing the French Open, it seemed to take the Fed Express a while to get going, slipping in the semi-finals at tournaments in both Halle and Stuttgart, but he is yet to be challenged or lose a set in the first three rounds at the biggest grand slam of them all.

After convincing wins against Guido Pella and Marcus Willis, he came up against Daniel Evans who had defeated Alexandr Dolgopolov. It was a commanding performance from Federer who won 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

Steve Johnson on the other hand only just missed out being a seeded player in the tournament despite being ranked 29 in the world, due to Wimbledon’s complicated seeding structure.

He has been in some fantastic form during the build up to the championships, and also during the first three rounds. After winning the tournament in Nottingham, beating the likes of Kevin Anderson, Andreas Seppi and Pablo Cuevas, he has only lost one set in the first three rounds.

He has played a strong all around game, getting over Malek Jaziri and Jeremy Chardy before dropping the first set to Grigor Dimitrov, only to come back and win in four.

The pair have never faced off before this meeting, and the winner will take on either Marin Cilic or Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals.

Prediction
Johnson will find a way to push the Fed, but ultimately won’t be able to get the job done, setting up a cracking quarter-final battle.

Federer in four sets.
