31 days to Rio: Debbie Flintoff-King snatches gold at the line

Debbie Flintoff-King claims gold in 1988 (Australian Olympic Committee).

Everyone loves a good comeback victory. But as strong a finisher as Debbie Flintoff-King was, this one never looked like it was going to happen.

Having finished sixth in the 400 metres hurdles in Los Angeles 1984, Flintoff-King embarked on a preparation which seemed to have her in prime position for the ’88 Games in Seoul.

She won Commonwealth gold in 1986 in the 400m hurdles, as well as in the flat race over the same distance, and notched the fastest time of the year in the hurdles in 1988 before the Olympics.

The Aussie, it seemed, was primed for a tilt at gold.

But just three days before she was due to fly to Seoul, tragedy struck. Flintoff-King’s older sister Noeline passed away from a sudden heart attack, aged just 31. Making matters worse, Flintoff-King also had to deal with a persistent throat infection during the Games.

On the track, there were few signs of the grief and poor health Flintoff-King was dealing with. She cruised through the heats and then set an Olympic record in the semi-finals.

In the final, things weren’t going so well. The Soviet Union’s Tatyana Ledovskaya was running a fine race, and when she cleared the final hurdle well ahead of Flintoff-King gold looked to be well beyond the Aussie.

It wasn’t.

Words don’t really do justice to Flintoff-King’s incredible finish. Suffice to say, she won by one one-hundredth of a second and set another Olympic record in the process. But honestly, you’re better off just watching the race:
