Northward bound: Still the right move for South African rugby?
So the dust has settled on the inaugural United Rugby Championship tournament, with the Stormers celebrating a deserved first championship win over the Bulls…
The Lions and the Kings will meet in what looks like a massive mismatch on Saturday morning (AEST). Join The Roar for live scores from the match, starting from 3am (AEST).
The Lions are currently South Africa’s top team and finished last week as the team with the best record in the Super Rugby competition and the first to officially put their spot in finals beyond doubt.
The Kings on the other hand after several years out of the competition have not had a lot of success to speak of in their return season, they have recorded just two wins (better only than the Sunwolves) and have a -338 points difference (comfortably the worst in the league, more than double that of any other team bar the Sunwolves).
These two sides met earlier in the year with a 45-10 win to the Lions away – with this match being played on the Lions’ home turf in Johannesburg, the gap between the two may be even wider.
The Lions are playing the same side that beat the Sharks last week and will likely look to take a big win in this match before possibly resting a number of players for their match against the Jaguares in Argentina in the final round.
The Kings, on the other hand, have made a number of changes and have some debutants in the mix as well. Captain Steven Sykes will be notably absent, withdrawn from the match due to personal reasons, while Andisa Ntsila, who joined the team on loan from the SWD Eagles yesterday, will get his first Super Rugby opportunity.
Prediction
The Lions should absolutely dominate here – they’ll look to record a bonus point victory but then may play more conservatively once that appears to be made certain.
Lions by 35.
