Sydney 2000 had plenty of great moments, but none were as surprising as the Greco-Roman wrestling gold medal contest between Alexander Karelin and Rulon Garnder.
To give some context, Karelin was a Russian heavyweight who hadn’t lost an international match in 14 years. He had three gold medals and nine world championships. He’d never even been scored against on the previous decade.

Gardner hadn’t even won a college title when he was at the University of Nebraska.
Even the physical appearances of the two wrestlers revealed the clear favourite. Karelin was just under two metres of shredded, corded muscle. Gardner looked a rotund farmer. To be fair, he had grown up on a dairy farm.
It wasn’t quite David and Goliath – Gardner did, after all, have a 54-inch chest. It was more a case of one Goliath against another weaker, much less scary Goliath.
When he scored the first point, Gardner shocked everyone – including the judges, who had to check the replays before actually awarding it. Given the time between Karelin conceding points, it was understandable.
If that was shocking, then Gardner hanging on for the rest of the match was even moreso. But when the overtime period finished with the scoreline still reading 1-0 – wrestlers have to score three points to win in regular time – the gold medal was his.
After the contest, Gardner summed up just how unlikely the victory was.
“When did I actually think I could beat him?” Gardner said. “About ten minutes ago.”
Considering Karelin had dropped the American on his head in their only previous meeting, a 5-0 domination, it’s not surprising.
