For the eighth time in her long and illustrious career, Serena Williams is leaving a grand slam tournament with both the singles and doubles titles in hand.

The world No.1 had a comfortable enough win over Angelique Kerber in the women’s singles final last night, getting some revenge for her loss to Kerber in the final of the Australian Open earlier this year.

The 7-5, 6-3 scoreline showed a tight match but one in which Williams was clearly superior. She finished the tournament having dropped only a single set on her way to victory, making a clear statement that despite being the runner-up only in the first two grand slams of the year, she is still the top name in women’s tennis.

The makes 22 grand slams singles titles for Serena, drawing level with American Steffi Graf and now only two behind the all-time leader, Australian Margaret Court.

If Serena can win at the US Open later this year it will set up potentially a very special occasion where she could equal Court’s record of 24 grand slam singles titles here in Australia in 2017.

With the singles title won, Serena took a brief break while Pierre-Hughes Herbert and Nicolas Mahut won the men’s doubles, before she and sister Venus returned to the court to play for the women’s doubles title.

The unseeded sisters came up against Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova, and beat them in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

That marks a fourteenth grand slam doubles title for Serena and Venus, a monumental achievement, and it’s a combined ten times that one of the sisters has come away from a grand slam with two titles – the eighth time for Serena, with Venus having done so twice beforehand.
