Cristiano Ronaldo might get a lot of people offside so to speak with his ways both on and off the pitch, but new statistics released by Facebook show there is no denying just how much he is talked about, whether it is positive or critical.
Even though Ronaldo didn’t take part in the second half of the 2016 Euro final against France he was the most discussed player during the match by a considerable margin. In fact, he received over half of the total mentions on Facebook.
Pepe was the only other player in double figures, receiving ten per cent of the total mentions.

The numbers are really quite incredible, with over 45 million people having 146 million interactions throughout the match.
When it came to which topics were being discussed, Ronaldo lifting the trophy was ahead of everything else. Absolutely everything – it was ahead of the match’s biggest moments, the final whistle, goals, injuries which is really quite strange, although it just goes to show Ronaldo’s pull in the social media world.
In fact, Ronaldo’s injury did come in at number four.
Unsurprisingly, Ronaldo was the most discussed player in Portugal although he only received 44 per cent of total mentions – which was less than what it was globally and surprisingly, less than in France itself.

It just goes to show that the players who can put on the best show, bring the best talking points and play at the highest level will nearly always be the ones to draw the most mentions on social media.
