The King is dead, long live the King. Yes State of Origin is finished for another year and as quickly as you can mutter “Sayonara Gal, peace out CP13”, the National Rugby League kicks back into overdrive.

Welcome to The Roar‘s NRL Expert Tips for Round 19.

Remember when Friday Night Football was the undisputed clash of the round? Under the bright lights and in prime-time, nothing said blockbuster quite like Friday Night Football.

Whether it was the ruthless Sydney Roosters against the mongrel of Canterbury in the early 2000s, Wayne Bennett’s Brisbane against Brian Smith’s Parramatta or basically anybody against early 1990’s Canberra – Friday Night was the bee’s knees, baby.

And keeping to the traditions of Billy Thorpe’s classic theme song, Steve “Blocker” Roach and more floodlights than you can count, the NRL has dished up a cracker on Friday night when St George Illawarra host the Gold Coast Titans.

If this fixture doesn’t pull in a crowd at Kogarah then you can bet the doomsayers will be calling for NRL CEO Todd Greenberg’s head and declaring Sydney to the AFL.

Oh what will we do, fair lovers of rugby league?

Oh the humanity!

Tips:
Titans, Sea Eagles, Broncos, Storm (Powerplay), Eels, Sharks.

“Dragons and the Titans is not exactly a marquee matchup to take us into the post Origin portion of the season. I’ll take the Titans in what projects as a dour affair.

“Eagles have taken this home game to Perth and I’m counting on the extra travel to knock the Warriors around. I’ll take the Eagles in a close one.

“I’m submitting these tips on Tuesday so by the time this game starts the Eels might have Jarryd Hayne. Even if they don’t I think they’ll edge the Panthers.”

Mary Konstantopoulos
Tips:
Dragons, Sea Eagles, Broncos, Storm (Powerplay), Eels, Sharks.

“Can I tip Souths v Brisbane as the worst game of the round? The Broncos have really struggled in recent weeks, with most of their Origin stars named to back up this weekend, they should be able to capitalise against a Souths side that can’t seem to hold the ball.

“They have no reason to still be able to turn up on the field, but for some reason the Eels keep putting in. I expect them to beat the Panthers this weekend who have not quite looked the same since Bryce Cartwright moved to five-eighth.

“If the Sharks can beat the Panthers missing all their Origin heroes, then surely they should be able to easily dispose of the Roosters on Monday night. Watch this space – Sharks to go 14 in a row.”

Tim Gore
Tips:
Titans, Warriors, Broncos, Storm (Powerplay), Panthers, Sharks.

“The Broncos must bounce back and who better to do it against then the depleted Rabbits. Might be a big score. Perhaps Milford will reappear?

“The Panthers must win against the Eels. They will.

“The Roosters will really challenge the Sharks, but the Sharks will make it 14 on the trot.”

Curtis Woodward
Tips:
Titans, Warriors, Broncos, Storm (Powerplay), Panthers, Sharks.

“Some really tough picks this weekend and it starts in Benji Marshall’s 250th match on Friday night. Going against St George Illawarra for the same reason I always tip against them – Gold Coast has more football in them.

“Penrith looked pedestrian last weekend but cannot be that bad two weeks in a row and I think they’ll burst Parramatta’s bubble.

“Half tempted to tip the Roosters against the high-flying Cronulla Sharks but I don’t think the Sharks winning streak has to end just yet.”
