Today we are going taking five of tennis’ greatest emerging young stars (age 19-23) with enough matches under their belt and statistically analyse which player is the greatest.

We will be looking at their wins over current top 20 players, how far they can go in a grand slam tournament and how many titles they have won.

Players: Nick Kyrgios, Borna Coric, Dominic Thiem, Alex Zverev, Bernard Tomic

Nick Kyrgios
Australia’s so called bad boy of tennis Nick Kyrgios has exceptional talent on the court with powerful shots all round but none better than his ripping forehand. All of that, plus his imposing figure, amounts to a nightmare for any opponent.

He burst onto the scene in 2014 with his stunning wimbledon campaign beating the then world number one, Rafa Nadal, as well as many others.

Borna Coric
Coric led all teenagers in wins in 2015 with an impressive 26 victories, inking his name as a next generation star. He has great ability to stay in the rally and his backhand drive down the line is as classy as you’ll see.

Despite his lack of height he uses every inch of it to try to wreak havoc on his opponents

Dominic Thiem
Has the most wins in 2016 to date and already with seven titles under his belt and a grand slam semi final, he has had an illustrious career so far. His repertoire of shots are extensive but if you give him room he will hit a booming backhand winner right down the line.

Alex Zverev
At just 19, Zverev shocks his opponents with his talent and all-round ability. With some wins over big names in his career, he has a bright future ahead.

Bernard Tomic
A tall Australian who has won junior Grand Slam championships and has made it to the last 16 in grand slams multiple times. His big serve and great baseline play are the best parts of his repertoire.

Now let’s have a look at how these players go when playing against others in the top 20.

Dominic Thiem: 38% of matches won, 4 wins over top 5 players
Nick Kyrgios: 33% matches won, 4 wins over top 5 players
Bernard Tomic: 19% matches won, 1 win over top 5 players
Alex Zverev: 16% matches won, 1 win over top 5 players
Borna Coric: 14% matches won, 2 wins over top 5 players

Now let’s have a look at how they fare in the grand slams and how often they get to the third round.

Nick Kyrgios: third round 8/15 times (53%), best performance QF (aus 2015, Wimbledon 2014)

Borna Coric: third round 2/9 (22%), best performance third round (Roland Garros 2015, 2016)

Now let’s look at our final piece of information how many tour finals they’ve reached.
Dominic Thiem: 9 Career ATP finals, 7 wins, 2 runner up
Bernard Tomic: 5 career ATP finals, 3 wins, 2 runner up

So now if we combine all three ladders, statistically, the ladder is as follows.
Dominic Thiem
Nick Kyrgios
Bernard Tomic
Alex Zverev
Borna Coric

So Thiem edges out the others on the top of the ladder, which isn’t surprising considering he is the highest ranked. In fact by sheer coincidence, they place in ranking order.

Do you agree? Are these five tennis’ best five rising stars, or should I have added someone else or another key stat?
