The future of NSW Origin

Matt Moylan and Greg Inglis could still be there in 2020, but how will Origin change? (AAP Image/Paul Miller)

As a proud Queenslander, I have attempted to look into NSW’s Origin side in the years to come. It’s open to discussion, so leave a comment down below about any changes you’d make.

I’ve added a number of x-factors to the side including, James Tedesco, Jack Bird, Bryce Cartwright and Tyrone Peachey – who can all change the momentum of the game within seconds.

Tedesco with his speed, Bird with his all around skill, Cartwright as a ball playing forward with late offloads and Peachey who can make a line break anywhere on the field and can play in several positions. Having all these players on the field at the same time could prove to be a huge headache for the Queensland defensive line.

As for the risky decision of Matt Moylan in the halves, it worked in Origin 3 and Moylan will only improve as each year goes by. He plays a lot like a five-eighth in attack for Penrith every weekend. The only thing to improve in his game is obviously his front line defence, as he was targeted in game 3 and he let in a try to a rampaging Gavin Cooper.

Playing for Panthers, he makes correct decisions most of the time which makes me believe he can match it at the top level.

Playing Bryce Cartwright in the lock position gives him the go ahead to go wherever on the field and he can utilise his passing skills and late offloads to the sides full advantage.

Also being from Penrith, it will give the Blues some instant chemistry between players like Moylan, Josh Mansour, Peachey and Cartwright.

The forward pack in this side is a lot like the Queensland pack at the moment, only a couple big boppers and the others are built for long stints on the field and can all provide something different for the team whether it’s a sneaky offload or skilful passing. With the pace of the game amplified in Origin it is essential all players can keep up and have high stamina, which is why I’ve chosen the players I have.

As for the Fullback, either Josh Dugan or Tedesco can be the man for the job, however I think Dugan is better equipped for the wing compared to Teddy, which is why I put him out on the edge.

In the next few years both Queensland and NSW will have a lot of new faces in the Origin arena. As we all know, ten out of the last 11 series have fallen into Queensland ‘s lap – expect that to change.

I don’t believe there will be three or more years in a row where a state holds the shield. It’ll be an even playing field once the legendary Queensland players retire. However, there a lot of gun players waiting in the wings for an opportunity.

Naturally, I’m saying Queensland will still have a slight advantage over New South Wales, but there’s a lot to look forward to if you’re a Blues supporter.
