Jarryd Hayne’s list of potential clubs in the NRL has started to shrink, with the Sydney Roosters, South Sydney Rabbitohs and Newcastle Knights all pulling out of the race to sign the code-hopping superstar.

Hayne is believed to be interested in playing in Sydney, leaving the Parramatta Eels and St George Illawarra Dragons as the current frontrunners to claim his signature.

But that hasn’t stopped clubs outside of the harbour city – namely the Gold Coast Titans – from seeking to add Hayne to their roster.

“Any NRL club would be interested in Jarryd Hayne. But there are a lot of things that would have to fall into place for us to be able to table an offer,” said Titans chief executive Graham Annesley.

“Yes, there have been some general discussions but there hasn’t been negotiations as such,” he said. “We certainly have not tabled an offer.”

Money is proving to be the major issue for other clubs in attempting to sign Hayne, with all of the Roosters, Rabbitohs and Knights scratching themselves from of Hayne Stakes because of a lack of salary cap room.

“Jarryd would take up a lot of salary cap and clubs at this stage are locking down for next season,” Roosters chief executive John Lee said. “I don’t want to offer false expectations. Our cap will be expended for next year – there’s not Jarryd Hayne room in our cap.”

While Parramatta remains the most likely destination for the 28-year-old, there have been rumblings that Hayne could make a move to play rugby union, even though his stint with Fiji’s sevens team rules him ineligible to play for the Wallabies.

Hayne met with ARU boss Bill Pulver earlier this week, who later confirmed the code would be interested in luring the former Dally M winner to a Super Rugby franchise.

“Obviously if he’s interested in playing rugby, we’re very interested in having him,” Pulver said. “I don’t know whether he’ll end up joining rugby, but we’ve got a pretty compelling offer for him.”
