Hawthorn’s triple premiership midfielder Bradley Hill is likely to head home to Perth at the end of the AFL season.
Hill met Fremantle coach Ross Lyon this week after being given time off during the Hawks’ 10-day break before Sunday’s game against Richmond at the MCG.
Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said the club was aware Hill, picked to play against the Tigers, was considering returning to WA after five seasons with the Hawks.
“The bottom line is he’s a West Australian boy, he has family back there and he has a brother (Stephen) who plays for Fremantle. We’ve been aware for five or six weeks and Bradley has spoken to us about it,” the Hawks coach said.
“We want to work through it in a mature way. He’s contracted until the end of next year and we’re not going to let him go easily by any stretch.
“But we’ll try to accommodate it if a deal can be reached at the end of the year.
“There’s every chance he’s going to be at Hawthorn next year and beyond. It’s not a fait accompli that he’s going to go.”
Hill attracted police attention twice this year, including being charged with assault following a suburban nightclub altercation during summer.
Clarkson admitted Hill had found it tough being so far away from his family and support networks.
“It’s (the decision) mainly around family. He has younger brothers and sisters and I suppose the lure of playing with his brother is pretty strong too,” he said.
“We’ll see how it all unfolds over the next few weeks and that will certainly play out at the back end of the year rather than now.”
