The Sydney Swans have survived an almighty scare at the SCG, eventually holding on to beat a courageous Carlton Blues outfit by just 6 points.

Patrick Cripps and Bryce Gibbs were outstanding in defeat, between them amassing 63 disposals and 24 tackles. Sam Docherty, Kade Simpson and Ed Curnow were also fantastic in taking it up to the highly-fancied Swans, but couldn’t quite do enough to take the points in a tough encounter.

Luke Parker was the hometown hero, kicking the last-quarter goal that proved to be the difference, his second for the day, capping off a trademark dominant performance for the Swans superstar that included 24 disposals and 8 tackles.

Lance Franklin finished the game with 4 goals in a tough duel with Sam Rowe. Also fantastic for the Swans was Josh P Kennedy, who worked his way into gathering a game-high 35 disposals and 12 clearances.

Both teams showed tremendous tackling pressure and wonderful defensive nous from the outset, with plenty of class on display in the high-intensity contest.

It was a game of momentum swings all day, with Carlton starting well and taking a lead into halftime before a third quarter Sydney burst became the definitive turning point.

The Blues looked the better side in the final term and with a few more minutes may have been able to steal the unlikeliest of wins – but the Swans played the clock well and were able to hold on to an important four points.

The 10.14 scoreline was far from ideal from the Swans, who will look to improve on that accuracy next week in a crucial road match against Fremantle.

Carlton will go from one of the game’s toughest tasks to the other, taking on the Hawks in Tasmania – although after today’s effort, who knows?
