It was one of the most sickening moments witnessed on the AFL field in 2016.

This one is not for the squeamish.

Western Bulldogs player Mitch Wallis tried to clear the ball away, but was knocked off balance just as went to kick the ball. It resulted in the 23-year-old kicking his other leg and the force was enough to break his leg.

Former Richmond player Nathan Brown suffered a similar leg break in his career and told Fairfax it’s a long road back to recovery.

“Everybody told me not to rush it. I did and I was probably never the same player,” Brown said.

“Hospital is the easy part .. when you get home, that’s the real hard part.”

Wallis’ leg break came at a crucial moment in the fourth quarter against St Kilda. It shocked supporters and players, many of whom were visibly distressed by what they saw at the end of the game.

St Kilda went on to win, but the Bulldogs were more concerned about their mate who faces a lengthy stint on the sideline.
