South Sydney stand-in captain Sam Burgess echoed the frustrations of many an NRL-fan when he pondered aloud over another bunker howler: “How do they get it wrong?”
Souths were livid after a Joe Burgess try was disallowed midway through the second half in Monday night’s 20-12 loss to Manly at Allianz Stadium that put an end to their finals chances.
The try was given on the field before being referred, but the bunker turned it down claiming Burgess failed to “re-grip” the ball after losing control.
Try try would have brought the score to 18-16, leaving Adam Reynolds a very-gettable conversion to tie the scores with 20 minutes remaining and Souths with all the momentum after fighting their way back from 18-0 down.
Former grand final referee Bill Harrigan blew up on Triple M’s coverage.
“It’s wrong, wrong, wrong,” he said.
Burgess just couldn’t understand it.
“It thought it was a dead set try,” he said.
“I just don’t know how they can get it wrong I really don’t.
“I tried to ask a question on the field why has it been disallowed?
“There is no answer, I don’t think the referees knew why, as a player it is pretty frustrating.
“I’m not blaming the referees I thought Manly were good but some big moments in the game, we (as a game) need to get better.”
Souths coach Michael Maguire was equally confused.
“They are defining moments in the game,” he said.
“We made it hard for ourselves in the first half but we achieved what we wanted to in the second half, getting our completions up but those sorts of things in the game are defining moments.
“You say you thought it was a try and I did think the same.”
The win keeps alive Manly’s slim finals hopes, but Souths will miss the finals for the first time under Maguire, who joined the club in 2012 and led them to the 2014 title.
