Hello Roarers and welcome to this week’s edition of The Roar AFL MVP! We’ve got a double edition this time around, covering all of the votes from the past two weeks of the AFL. See below who our live blogging team voted as the best of the best over Rounds 17 and 18.

Round 17 votes

Sydney Swans 70 defeated by Hawthorn Hawks 75
Blogged by Connor Bennett

3: Gary Rohan – A huge game in a losing effort, possibly the best of his career. Four big goals at vital points in the game, on top of 12 disposals, he was just all over the park all night and really dominated through the midfield.

2: Cyril Rioli – Other than kicking the winning goal with just over a minute to go in the game, Rioli celebrated his 27th birthday with 17 disposals and a pair of six pointers. Similar to Rohan, he managed to appear everywhere across the SCG for the full four quarters.

1: Sam Mitchell – An incredible game-high 37 disposals for the 33-year old, 11 more than his closest team mate. He played a typical Mitchell performance, just grinding away the whole night behind the scenes, dominating on and off the ball to keep his side in the contest.

Fremantle Dockers 61 defeated by Geelong Cats 78
Blogged by Matthew Walsh

3: Patrick Dangerfield – Tonight will strengthen his Brownlow claims. He had 31 possessions but where no key forward could get going, also kicked 4 goals.

2: Stephen Hill – Was huge after half time but lacked support. 37 possessions and 5 tackles.

1: Corey Enright – The veteran was his usual solid self down back. 30 possessions and 12 marks.

Richmond Tigers 102 defeated Essendon Bombers 83
Blogged by Lou Lando

3: Dustin Martin – The difference between the two sides – 43 disposals, ten clearances and two crucial goals, he did it all.

2: Zach Merrett – Was ferocious at the ball finishing with ten tackles and kept his team in it all day.

1: Trent Cotchin – He and Martin had 40 contested possessions between them and his calm and poise ensured his team kept its nose in front.

North Melbourne Kangaroos 77 defeated by Port Adelaide Power 105

3: Travis Boak – The skipper stood up for the Power. 32 disposals at 84 per cent efficiency, seven tackles, five inside 50s and an important goal in the third quarter.

2: Justin Westhoff – Immense for Port Adelaide at both ends of the ground. 20 disposals at 85 per cent efficiency, three goals up forward and a number of important plays down back too.

1: Robbie Gray – Got better as the game wore on, collecting 35 touches, five inside 50s and two goals.

Western Bulldogs 107 defeated Gold Coast Suns 59
Blogged by Sam Walker

3: Koby Stevens – A huge 34 touches, eight clearances and two goals from Stevens was a very strong performance.

2: Clay Smith – A quality performance with 17 disposals and seven shots on goal, unfortunately, the result was just 3.4 for the evening.

1: Matthew Boyd – Important as always among the Bulldogs’ backmen, 29 disposals and eight marks.

Adelaide Crows 97 defeated Collingwood Magpies 69

3: Brad Crouch – Dug in deep to rack up 29 touches – 16 contested – nine tackles and five inside 50s.

2: Jarryd Lyons – Very strong around the ground with 21 disposals, seven tackles and two goals.

1: Adam Treloar – Tried all night for the Pies, collecting 36 disposals at 81 per cent efficiency and seven tackles.

Carlton Blues 75 defeated by West Coast Eagles 82
Blogged by Connor Bennett

3: Patrick Cripps – A massive performance through the midfield for Carlton’s budding superstar – 29 touches, twelve clearances and a goal.

2: Luke Shuey – A strong performance, 23 touches, eight tackles and a goal.

1: Mark LeCras – 18 disposals, seven tackles, two goals and three goal assists – possibly the most important factor in what was a tight game.

St Kilda Saints 110 defeated Melbourne Demons 74
Blogged by Connor Bennett

3: Jack Viney – The best for the Dees in a losing effort, Viney kept himself busy throughout the afternoon and into the night, plugging away as the workhorse more than an individual stand out. 33 disposals and a game-high 24 handballs, a mere nine more than the next best, also racking up a game-high six tackles.

2: Tim Membrey – Racked up 16 disposals, 12 kicks and six marks inside 50. He led the offence with four goals to create the gap his side would hold for the remainder.

1: Leigh Montagna – Similiar to Viney, Montagna wrestled the midfield away from Melbourne, leading the way for his forward line to capitalise on the pressure in the centre. 26 disposals, five inside 50s and a goal to top it off.

Brisbane Lions 67 defeated by GWS Giants 146
Blogged by TomC

3: Stephen Coniglio – The best inside midfielder on the ground with seven clearances, he also used the ball well when he had to create opportunities for the forwards. He had nine inside 50s and four goal assists, and could have had more with better finishing.

2: Callan Ward – A busy day for the captain, with 31 possessions and three classy goals.

1: Jeremy Cameron – He had a field day down forward, with 8 marks inside the forward 50. He probably could have taken a few more shots, finishing with three goals and two assists.

Blogged by Connor Bennett

3: Lachie Neale – What a game from Neale in a losing effort. A game high 43 disposals for the day – a mere 15 better than the next best – also leading the way with 25 handballs, 23 contested possessions, 10 clearances and a goal to top it all off.

2: Alex Sexton – Sexton flew under the radar a bit, but it was a real workhorse performance from him. 26 disposals, a team high 22 kicks, and a game-high 14 inside 50s, the only man to break double figures in that stat.

1: Tom J Lynch – Four goals lead the way during the tight second half, also scooping up 17 disposals in a strong display from the 23-year old, executing his chances and keeping the pressure on the Dockers back line.

West Coast Eagles 66 defeated Melbourne 60
Blogged by Sam Walker

3: Matt Priddis – Busy all day for the Eagles even when his teammates were struggling. 24 disposals, 17 contested possessions, seven clearances, 15 tackles and a goal.

2: Nathan Jones – A big performance from the captain – 34 touches, eight tackles, six inside 50s and a goal assist.

3: Jack Steven – Not much doubt about this one. 39 touches, seven tackles and a goal only tells part of the story. He was involved with absolutely everything, and was the dominant player on the ground.

2: Marcus Bontempelli – Announced himself in the second quarter, when he had nine touches and two goals to keep the Dogs in touch. Stayed heavily involved for the rest of the game both in the midfield and forward, and finished with 25 touches, seven marks and three goals.

1: Nick Riewoldt – Played forward more than in the middle tonight, and was highly effective in a game where that was very hard to do. He kicked four goals and had ten marks.

Geelong Cats 85 defeated Adelaide Crows 55
Blogged by Joel Erickson

3: Corey Enright – What a display from the ‘old-timer.’ 31 disposals, and seemed to repel any attack that came towards his general vicinity. A big reason why the Crows couldn’t score tonight.

2: Jimmy Bartel – From one old fella to another. Bartel was rested last week, and he looked to have appreciated that rest with 34 touches and 9 clearances. A lot of his work came when the game was in the balance during the first half.

1: Patrick Dangerfield – He wasn’t in the running at three-quarter time if I’m honest, but his numbers were once again too good to ignore. Led all comers with 36 touches, and combined that with six clearances and six tackles for a well-rounded performance.

Essendon Bombers 91 defeated by Brisbane Lions 128
Blogged by Lou Lando

3: Stefan Martin – Most of his taps were to advantage, started many of their scoring attacks and was excellent at ground level.

2: Zach Merrett – Just didn’t stop all day, 86 per cent disposal efficiency and most of his kicks which were greater than 30 metres hit their mark.

1: Tom Rockliff – 38 disposals and they weren’t just short sideways passes. 17 contested and a game-high ten inside 50s.

Hawthorn Hawks 114 defeated Richmond Tigers 44
Blogged by Sam Walker

3: Sam Mitchell – Celebrated his 300th game with yet another best on ground performance – 38 disposals and nine clearances, showing he’s a long way from finished.

2: Josh Gibson – 31 touches, 12 marks and a goal – another very strong performance.

1: Dustin Martin – 39 touches, 18 contested possessions, ten clearances and eight inside 50s, another prolific performance.

Port Adelaide 60 defeated by GWS Giants 79
Blogged by AJ Mithen

3: Dylan Shiel – The man mainly responsible for dragging the Giants off their feet. 13 contested possessions, eight clearances, six inside 50s and eight score involvements were the stats but his ability to influence the contest to clear the ball changed the game.

2: Shane Mumford – It took him a quarter to figure out how to handle Jackson Trengove and the Port ruck setup, but once he did he carried on his merry way playing a key role in the middle and down back. The condition of his left knee will be critical to how far the Giants can go this year.

1: Tom Scully – Kept the Giants in the game through the first half and improved as the game went on. Has been great in 2016.
