Queensland coach Kevin Walters is set to rejoin Brisbane as an assistant coach with the NRL club for the remainder of the 2016 season.

Walters stood down from his role with the Broncos last season to focus on his Maroons’ State of Origin duties after taking over from Mal Meninga.

However, now the interstate period is over, Walters will come on board with the Broncos to help them out of their Origin slump. Over the Origin period, the Broncos won just two of eight games.

Speaking on on Fox Sports’ NRL 360, Walters indicated his interest in a possible role with the Broncos.

“The option isn’t there at the moment but, if it did bob up, it’s something I’d have to speak to the QRL about,” Walters said.

“Obviously, my loyalties lie with the Queensland Rugby League.”

Former Brisbane great Walters said the Broncos had a few issues they needed to sort out before the finals.

“I think they’ve got to help themselves first and foremost; that team has got to get together as one,” he said.

“I think they’re lacking a little bit of confidence. They are missing some players who have been playing with them regularly for the past 18 months and are not there now, particularly on their left side.

“I think there’s three or four or five things that are not quite right with the Broncos.”
