Match result:

The Matildas have suffered a disappointing start to their campaign in Rio, going down to Canada 2-0.

It was a horror start for the Australians, who conceded in the opening 20 seconds following a defensive blunder.

A comeback appeared on the cards when Canada was handed a red card midway through the first half.

However, despite being down a player, Canada would extend their lead in the 80th minute.

Final score:
Canada 2
Matildas 0

Looking for their first ever Olympic medal, the Matildas will head into Rio with arguably their best ever squad.

After being eliminated out of the 2015 World Cup in the quarter-final stages, the Matildas will also be looking to break the ‘last eight’ curse that has haunted them over many world cups and the 2004 Olympic games.

The Matildas have a tough draw ahead of them, being pooled with Germany as well as Canada. However, their performance at the 2015 World Cup showed every nation that they have the quality to hang with any side.

Being led by experienced forward Lisa De Vanna, the Matildas squad will have plenty of support all over the pitch, particularly in the midfield and back via Emily van Egmond and Steph Catley respectively.

Canada will be entering Rio with a fairly new squad, after opting to change their side after last year’s World Cup, which they hosted.

Only seven of their 18-woman squad from the 2012 London games remain for the 2016 games, an event which saw Canada come agonisingly close to securing a silver medal. Instead, they had to settle for bronze.

Canada will be looking to better that this time around, and a younger squad that has had time to prepare may just get them over the line this year.

This one could really go either way, but a Matildas side with a bit more experience may just get the job done.
