» MATCH REPORT: Boomers leave it late but get a big win over Serbia

It was Australia’s NBA guards that led the ay for the Boomers, with Patty Mills top scoring with 26 -point and Matthew Dellavedova knocking down 23.

Impressively, the double-digit win came after a dominant final quarter, in which Australia scored 33 points to 17, after trailing by a point at the final break.

After an impressive start to their Olympic campaign with a 87-66 win over France, the Boomers now have a chance to prove they are genuine medal contenders by securing a top four position.

Australia’s win over France was their first winning start to an Olympics in 20 years, with star players Andrew Bogut and Patty Mills proving their worth.

Bogut made it past a knee injury he sustained playing in the NBA Finals, scoring 18 points and shooting at 90 percent. Mills was the top scorer with 21 points.

Bogut and Mills though were aptly backed up in what turned out to be a complete team effort – nearly everyone who took to the floor stood up, with the Boomers defensive structure looking fantastic and only challenged by one Tony Parker run in the second quarter.

Standing in the Boomers way is Serbia, who are coming off a big win of their own.

They took down Venezuela 86-62 in an impressive showing, and a win for them would also see them secure a top-four spot.

Miroslav Raduljica was the best for the Serbs scoring 18 points and adding a couple of rebounds and assists, ending with a +22 efficiency rating.

He was backed up by top point scorer and Serbia’s key man Bogdan Bogdanovic who had 19 points and an overall ‘stat sheet stuffer’ of a performance.

With the United States, who won the last two gold medals, up next for the Boomers, they will know how much a win is really worth – it basically secures them a spot in the finals and takes the pressure off for that massive game.

Prediction
The Boomers looked really good against France, and they shouldn’t have too many problems knocking off Serbia.
