Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Murray will go head to head today to determine who comes away with the gold medal for men’s singles tennis at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. It’s been a tournament of shocks and surprises with few more impressive than del Potro. He knocked out the top seed Novak Djokovic in the first round of the tournament, immediately signalling to the field that he is here to win a medal and not kidding around.

From there del Potro won his way through to the quarter-finals where he met and defeated Roberto Bautista Agut, and then dealt a double blow to the people of Spain by knocking out Rafael Nadal in the semi-final.

After such a long lay off due to injury in recent times, del Potro is in close to the best form of his life – expect perhaps for his 2009 US Open win. His previous best result in the Olympics was bronze in the London 2012 games.

If he wants to get the gold though he’ll have to knock off Andy Murray who is in no shortage of good form himself, with wins over a number of top players including American Steve Johnson and Japan’s Kei Nishikori on his route to the final.

Murray came to Rio fresh from winning a second Wimbledon title and after claiming gold in this event at London 2012 would love to add a second gold medal to his closest.

Prediction
Murray probably heads in as the favourite, but I’ll back the underdog.

Juan Martin del Potro in three sets.
