The contest is evenly poised with Australia holding on to a two-run lead coming into Day 4 of the Third Test against Sri Lanka. Join The Roar from 2:30pm (AEST) for all the live scores, highlights and updates coming out of Colombo.

State of the Match

Centuries to Steve Smith and Shaun Marsh steadied the ship for Australia and wrestled Sri Lanka onto the back foot early on day three, but a Rangana Herath masterclass with the ball brought the hosts right back into the contest.

The Sri Lankan veteran weaved his orthodox magic to pick up 6/81 and contain the Australians to a 24 run lead at the end of the innings.

The Baggy Greens lost their last nine wickets for 112 runs after cruising on a Smith and Marsh 246-run partnership.

It wasn’t all good news for the Sri Lankans though, losing their nightwatchman in the first over of the innings with just 15 minutes left in the day.

It’s been a fairly up and down contest overall so far, with Australia running riot, before letting in a big middle order partnership.

Then they were cruising with bat in hand, before collapsing late in the day.

Day 4 Preview

The Australians will again be looking towards Mitch Starc to contain the Sri Lankan batting order as he has done for majority of the series.

Early wickets are key in the morning session, because Australia don’t want to be chasing much more than 200, maybe 250 in the fourth innings on a dying Sri Lankan track.

Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva have a real chance to bat Australia out of the game if they can survive until lunch without losing a wicket, setting up the middle order to pack the runs on and possibly declare late in the day on the front foot and in a position to win the Test.

Australia have a lot to play for, not wanting to lose a clean sweep or their position in the Test rankings.

Who knows where this one will go, but we’re in for a very entertaining day of Test match cricket.
