Sydney FC have signed marquee striker Bobô to a reported one-year, $1 million contract, in an attempt to mend their goalscoring woes of last season.

The Brazilian is the striker Sydney fans have been waiting for since the departure of Golden Boot winner Marc Janko back in 2015.

Bobô’s best playing years came for Turkish giants Besiktas, whom he joined in 2006 from boyhood club Corinthians.

He played over 200 matches, scoring almost 100 goals in the Turkish League, the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League. His 18 goals in 2009 helped Besiktas to a domestic league and cup double.

He then made a move back to Brazil, with Cruzeiro. At the time clubs in the Serie A and La Liga were rumoured to have offered Besiktas €5 million for the striker’s services.

After only two goals in six months in his home league, Bobô returned to Turkey, joining Kaysiespor where he smashed 18 goals in his first season, winning the Golden Boot.

He hasn’t returned goals like that since, as injuries stalled his career in Turkey. He returned again to Brazil in 2015 with Gremio, leading the club to third and fifth place in the Brazilian Seriè A, scoring five goals in 20 matches.

He also has a small amount of international experience, representing Brazil at under 20s level 13 times, scoring seven goals.

Bobô offers a new way for Sydney FC to attack, being able to work with their midfielders a lot easier to build up play and keep possession, rather than playing on the counter-attack. The pace of Bernie Ibini and Filip Holosko can help Bobô act as a poacher in the box, adding a new attacking threat.

Although quite tall and built, the Brazilian is able to move past players and is agile, helping him in sticky situations inside the box.

Sydney recently promoted youth player George Timotheou as defensive cover on a two-year deal, and veteran and fan-favourite Alex Brosque is expected to sign another one-year extension. Their Australian recruitment has been impressive too, with three former and one current Socceroos joining their ranks.
