Can Aussie James Duckworth get his US Open campaign off to a good start or will he once again fail to push past the first round? Join The Roar for live scores from around 6am (AEST).

After a first round exit at Winston-Salem, James Duckworth will be hoping to move past Haase and book his place in the second round at New York following a mixed lead-up to the final grand slam of the year.

Duckworth kicked off his US Open campaign at Newport going down in the first round to Adrian Mannarino in an inspired effort 6-7, 7-6, 7-6.

The Australian made it through to the second round at Washington before losing to hometown hero John Isner 6-3, 6-4 later going on to lose at the hands of Mikhail Youzhny in North Carolina 7-6, 1-6, 6-3.

Despite having won just six of his last ten matches, Duckworth has shown glimpses of greatness with some strong efforts against the aforementioned ATP veterans.

The 24-year old has his work cutout for him with Dutch world no. 64 Robin Haase on the cards.

Haase was unsuccessful at the Olympics and hasn’t played in any tournaments during the lead-up to the US Open in what may prove to be a huge disadvantage.

Regardless, since falling to Jack Sock in the second round at Wimbledon he has had two strong tournaments on clay at Gstaad and Schevneningen finishing runner-up and winner respectively.

Apart from one lonely appearance at Rio where he fell to Joao Sousa in straight sets 6-1, 7-5, Haase hasn’t stepped foot on hard court since Indian Wells back in March.

The pair have never played each other before.

The winner will take on either qualifier Guido Andreozzi or world No.10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round.

Prediction
This is anyone’s to take. Duckworth will only just edge out Haase to move through to the second round.

Duckworth in five sets.
