After stunning Kei Nishikori in Cincinnati, Bernard Tomic will be aiming big at the US Open, kicking off his campaign against Damir Dzumhur. Join The Roar for live scores from around 4am (AEST).

Tomic’s victory over Nishikori 7-6, 7-6 was part of a sensational tournament at Cincinnati defeating Joao Sousa and David Goffin before moving on to meet Andy Murray in the quarterfinals going down 6-4, 6-4.

The Queensland local has been dealt a favourable draw with the possibility of a third round clash with Nick Kyrgios and a potential fourth round fixture against world No.4 Stan Wawrinka who hasn’t quite made his mark in 2016 after a dream year in 2015.

With Tomic’s recent experience against big-name players, he is a genuine threat and could make a serious run at the US Open.

Tomic has now won six of his last ten matches since he was ruled out of the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Damir Dzumhur’s US Open season has been unsuccessful so far with the Bosnian yet to win since arriving in the land of stars and stripes just under a month ago.

After making a first round exit at Rio, Dzumhur has since gone on to lose in qualifying to Stefan Kozlov at Cincinnati, also falling in the first round to Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in Winston-Salem.

Since making his debut at Arthur Ashe Stadium back in 2014, Dzumhur is yet to get past the first round although he managed to make a splash upon his last visit to the US reaching the fourth round at Miami.

The pair have met once with Tomic prevailing in the first round of last year’s US Open with a 5-7, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.

The winner will take on either Ivan Dodig or Illya Marchenko in the second round.

Prediction
Bernard Tomic will solidify himself as a US Open contender with a convincing straight sets win over Dzumhur.

Tomic in straight sets.
