Millman has crashed on to the scene establishing himself as one of Australia’s best hopes at grand slam glory.

The world No.66 has had a brilliant US Open season, reaching the second round at Washington after falling to Marcos Baghdatis and becoming the first player in Olympic tennis history to win 6-0, 6-0 with his victory over Ricardas Berankis.

Millman then fell to Kei Nishikori sending him north to Cincinnati where he reached the second round before making his mark at Winston-Salem.

Millman’s Winston-Salem campaign began with a few hiccups, coming back from a set down against each of Yoshihito Nishioka, Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Bjorn Fratangelo to book his place in the final eight.

The Aussie then knocked off Richard Gasquet in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 in what was a massive upset before losing in the semifinals to Pablo Carreno Busta in a hard-fought match 6-4, 7-6.

Thiem’s US Open campaign has been tough so far after being forced to retire at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The Austrian went onto Cincinnati defeating Millman 7-5, 6-1 in their only encounter so far on the ATP Tour to progress to the quarterfinals.
